Balearic Islands Day

Day Of The Balearic Islands

The Day of the Balearic Islands, also known as Autonomy Day, is celebrated every year at the beginning of March. These islands include a total of five islands located in the Mediterranean Sea:

  • Mallorca
  • Menorca
  • Ibiza
  • Formentera
  • Cabrera

Among these, Mallorca is the largest island. Cabrera, on the other hand, is the smallest and even uninhabited.

History Day of the Balearic Islands

The Statute of Autonomy came into force for the Balearic Islands in 1983. Since then, the population celebrates this event with a commemorative day, which is called “Día de les Illes Balears” in Spanish.

Officially, this day is a public holiday on the Balearic Islands and is celebrated traditionally and extensively. Residents and tourists alike can immerse themselves in history and enjoy many cultural events.

Celebrations

The Balearic Islands really go all out on this day. The islands organise countless events to celebrate the day. There are many concerts that invite young and old to dance and sing. Performances of traditional dances are particularly popular. Of course, there are also dance and sports performances that are worth a visit.

The most popular are the many markets. People can sample Mallorcan delicacies, buy local products and enjoy the flair with a coffee on one of the restaurant terraces.

The programme for the events is very varied. From a children’s programme, a second-hand book market, a show cooking, folklore performances, open day at the Balearic Parliament to great market stalls. There is something for everyone! Residents and tourists alike will have lots of fun and can also enjoy one culinary delight after another.
