The festival “Es Firo” in Sóller is one of the most famous and popular celebrations on Mallorca. Every year in May, the battle for dominance on Mallorca between the Moors and Christians is re-enacted here. It’s a spectacle not to be missed!
History
In May 1561, the Moors are said to have invaded the port of Sóller and tried to seize power on Mallorca. The pirates fought their way from the harbour of Port de Sóller to the centre of Sóller. There they fought hard and both sides gave everything.
In the end, the Christians won the battle on the village square in Sóller and put down the invaders with hard fighting. This historical event is still duly celebrated today.
Es Firo in Sóller
This festival is by no means an ordinary city festival. It is an authentic staging of the attack. This means that hundreds of Mallorcans in costume recreate the battle very vividly and as real as possible. This allows visitors to experience the action once again at close quarters. There is shouting, storming and slaughter. There are also loud projectiles and lots of sabres in action.
The festival lasts a few days and will take place this year from 11 to 15 May 2023. Of course, there is much more to experience besides the battle. For example, you can take part in a festive procession or visit the fair. The locals also celebrate in typical Mallorcan costumes, which you can admire on site.
