The festivities are celebrated to honor the history and to celebrate together in a happy atmosphere.

The “Festes del Rei En Jaume I,” translated means “Celebrations of King Jaume I”. It celebrates the reconquest of Mallorca by the same.

History Of Festes Del Rei En Jaume I

King Jaume I has an important role in the history of Mallorca. This is because he reached the island of Mallorca on September 11, 1229 and in the following months he reconquered it from the Arabs.

It is said that the Christian king invaded Santa Ponsa with over 150 ships and more than 13,000 men to fight the Muslim occupiers from there. They defended themselves as best they could, but in the end they had no chance against the king’s forces.

To commemorate this important event and not to let it be forgotten, the residents of Mallorca reenact it vividly every year. The conquest can be admired by tourists every year in September. The locals are well equipped for the occasion: costumes, guns, etc. are ready for the battle.

Celebrations

The historic liberation of Mallorca is celebrated extensively over several days in Santa Ponsa. Young and old enjoy the historical re-enactment and cheer with the victors at the end. It really is an impressive show. Besides the battle, however, there are many other festivities.

Visitors can, of course, visit the medieval market, which has all sorts of interesting market stalls. Obviously, there is also a great culinary offer. From paella to tapas, everything is represented.

During the festivities there are also always street parades. Here the locals wear typical, mallorquin costumes and present them with honor. In addition to street theater and dance performances, there is also a range of musical entertainment. Concerts or live music take place throughout the day.

Highlight Of The Festival

On the evening of September 11, the highlight of the festival takes place. Music and the dreaded demons are part of the party. They perform their fire dance, the so-called Correfoc, and also like to scare inattentive visitors.

In Spain, no great festival ends without a proper fireworks show. Therefore, visitors to the Festes del Rei En Jaume I can also enjoy a breathtaking fireworks display on the beach.

So if you visit Mallorca in early September, be sure to stop by Santa Ponsa.
