Malgrats Islands Mallorca

Malgrats Islands On Mallorca

The Malgrats Islands form a breathtaking, stone world on Mallorca. These are two small islands that jut out of the sea in front of Santa Ponsa, belonging to the municipality of Calviá. The larger of the two is called Illa Malgrats and the much smaller one is the so-called “rabbit island” Illa dels Conills. Together they cover 100 hectares and are uninhabited. Since 1984, conservationists and the municipality have been working to protect the islands as a nature and marine reserve. This was finally achieved in 2006, and since then they have been protected for their diversity of habitats and animal species of high value. Under this protective concept and the resulting restrictions, fishing as well as water and diving sports around the Malgrats Islands are subject to the imperative of responsible and sustainable action. They are considered landmarks of Santa Ponsa and are very popular to photograph.

Cycling on the Malgrats Islands

The islands are particularly popular when it comes to cycling, as the routes, especially Route 9, guarantee an excellent cycling experience. The routes are part of the Mallorcan network of cycle paths. A popular circular route, for example, goes from Calvià via Palmanova, Magaluf, El Toro, Santa Ponsa and back to Calvià.

Activities

The islands offer several hightlights, such as the perforated rock “Na Foradada”. Which can only be visited from a boat. In a few places, the islands can even be entered. Hobby fishing is permitted for fishing licence holders in the winter months under strict conditions. Canoe or kayak tours around the islands are also possible. Every year in August, you can take part in a canoe race.

Dives can only be done with a special permit for individuals or in guided tours. These can be organized at local diving schools. If you would like to experience the maritime flora and fauna without diving, you can explore them with a catamaran with underwater windows.
