San Joan, the magical night of St. John’s Night, has always been celebrated extensively on Mallorca. It takes place shortly after the summer solstice and this year falls on 23 June 2023. You can expect concerts, fireworks, lots of fun and romantic moments.
Significance Of St. John’s Eve
San Joan is an ancient pagan tradition that was later carried on with Christianity. It celebrates and welcomes the beginning of summer. At the same time, this day is also a day of remembrance for Saint John the Baptist, hence the name Saint John’s Eve. On this night, a wide variety of rituals are performed by Mallorcans to drive away evil spirits or to hope for the fulfilment of wishes. For this, friends and family gather on the beaches and have a picnic, as only Spaniards can do.
All over the towns and villages bonfires are set up and lit with joy in the night. These so-called “foguerons” are always accompanied by lots of onlookers, music and dancing people. So lots of fun is to be expected.
Midnight Bathing
Those who like it a little more romantic gather on the beach in the evening and light candles with many other people. People like to dress completely in white for this event. At midnight, another spectacle follows – midnight bathing. It is believed that jumping into the sea on this magical night cleanses the soul and brings luck for the coming year.
The bonfires as well as the night bathing symbolise purification and a new beginning. The campfires are the indispensable part and dancing around the fire has a long tradition.
St John’s Night In Palma
In the capital is already a great programme during the day going on. However, the Correfoc start punctually at 23:00. Here, devils with spectacular fireworks paraphernalia run through the crowd and chase the visitors. In addition, two fire dragons can be marvelled at. Music and delicious food will also be provided.
