Santuari De Lluc On Mallorca

The Santuari de Lluc, also known as the Lluc Monastery, is a significant place of pilgrimage on the Spanish island Mallorca. It is located in the municipality of Escorca in the heart of the impressive mountain landscape of the Sierra de Tramuntana, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History Of Santuari De Lluc

The monastery has a long history going back to the 13th century. Today, the Lluc monastery is a boarding school. The children are mainly taught music and are known for the internationally renowned choir “Blauets”. Its been said that a wooden figure of the Virgin Mary was found by a young shepherd boy led to the construction of a small chapel, which was expanded over the centuries and developed into a monastery complex.

The cloister is also known for the black Madonna, also called “La Moreneta”. She is the patron saint of Mallorca and is located in the basilica of the monastery. Every year, thousands of pilgrims and visitors seek out the statue and take the opportunity to attend services.

Lluc is considered the most significant sanctuary in Mallorca, with a strong religious and spiritual character.
