Every year in September, the wine festival “Festa des Vermar” takes place in Binissalem on Mallorca. The town is known for its wine production and is said to be the centre of Mallorcan wine growing. Accordingly, everywhere in the town are cosy bodegas, so-called wine bars, where wine can be consumed and bought.
The wine from this region is also very much in demand and well-known internationally. The quality and taste are the secret of success here. So, wine lovers will get their money’s worth in Binissalem.
History Of The Wine Festival
In 1965, several villagers decided to initiate a wine festival for the enjoyment of the village. The aim was to celebrate the hard work of wine growing and the tradition that goes with it in the community. To this day, this festival, the “Festa des Vermar”, takes place every year in September and now also attracts many tourists.
The festival is celebrated over two weeks and takes place directly after the grape harvest. The town is festively decorated and the Mallorcans wear their traditional costumes.
It is important to note that the festival falls on a different date each year. This year it will take place from 06. September to 24. September 2023.
Festivities
The special thing about this wine festival is probably the grape throwing, or rather the grape battle. For this, vast quantities of unusable grapes are gathered together and then used in a veritable grape battle. Young people in particular take great pleasure in throwing the grapes at each other. A very sticky affair that is incredibly fun.
Those who prefer it a little more civilised can consider grape stomping. Here, the grapes are still traditionally trampled with bare feet in wooden vats and thus pressed.
There is also a small parade, musical processions and traditional dances. The highlight here is also the dance of the demons, the so-called “Correfoc”. They dance around the organised fires and juggle with all kinds of fire.
Wine Festival Not Without Tasting
Of course, the most important thing is not missing at the “Festa des Vermar”. During the festival, visitors have the opportunity to taste a wide range of wines produced in Binissalem.
For this purpose, there are a number of tasting stalls where the most diverse types of wine can be tasted. From red wine to white wine to rosé and mixed drinks, everything is available. Culinary sensitivities are also catered for. There are traditional Mallorcan dishes served with the matching wine.
